چکیده

The occurrence of variants of the erythrocyte B agglutinogen, although rare, is of considerable practical importance because it may lead to errors in blood grouping. Subgroups of the B antigen have not been established although variants have been described. Moullec and co-workers reported a weakly reacting B antigen in 1955. They named it B. In 1958 Levine and associates described the genetically determined phenotype B, which also reacted as a weak B antigen. One year later Cameron and associates and Giles and co-authors reported the occurrence of a weak B antigen together with anti-B antibody in additional persons. They assumed that the antigen was acquired during old age and chronic disease. In 1961 Morrow and associates described a weak erythrocyte B agglutinogen that coexisted with anti-B antibody. They associated it with the blood group A that had been described by Andersen 1 year previously.

Prevalence and Haemolytic Significance of Red Cell Antibodies among Dangerous Universal Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital in South India

Background and Aims: A subgroup of group O individuals called ‘dangerous universal donors’ have immune (IgG) anti A and anti B antibodies which are active at 37˚C and capable of reacting with the red cells and causing lysis. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of dangerous O group among the voluntary donor population and to assess the relation between the degree of haemolysis and t...

Red Blood Cells Alloimmunization and Autoimmunization in Multi-transfused Thalassemia Patients in South of Iran

Background: Recurrent blood transfusion is a common treatment in patients with thalassemia. The development of antibodies against red blood cell (RBC) antigens complicates RBC cross-matching, enhances the in vivo destruction of transfused cells, accelerates tissue iron overloading, delays the provision of safe transfusion, and reduces health-related quality of life. Materials and Methods: In t...

Discrepancy in ABO Blood Grouping in a Blood Donor: A Case Report

Detection of ABO blood groups through agglutination is the basis of pre-transfusion testing. However, weak agglutination reactions may be obtained with reagent antibodies and are a result of weak expression of A and B antigens on red blood cell surface which may cause a discrepancy in blood group typing. Here, we report a donor which showed discrepancy between red blood cells (forward) and seru...

PURIFICATION AND MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF BCG ANTIGEN 60

Tuberculosis remains as an important socioeconomical and medical problem throughout the world and especially in Iran. Early and timely diagnosis of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis is vital to initiate prompt treatment. Current diagnostic methods are either slow or lack enough sensitivity or specificity. Several mycobacterial antigens are involved in the complex interaction with t...

Immunologic Basis and Immunoprophy-laxis of RhD Induced Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN)

RhD antigen is the most immunogenic and clinically significant antigen of red blood cells after ABO system. It has historically been associated with hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) which is now routinely prevented by the administration of polyclonal anti-D immunoglobulin. This management of HDN has proven to be one of the most successful cases of prophylactic treatment based on antibody ...
